A 1961 romantic comedy, it was directed by Blake Edwards and starred Audrey Hepburn, George Peppard, Patricia Neal, Buddy Ebsen, Martin Balsam, and Mickey Rooney. The film was loosely based on Truman Capote’s novella of the same name.
Hepburn played the role of Holly Golightly, an eccentric, naïve girl which Hepburn revealed was her most challenging role as she was naturally an introvert and had to play the role of an extrovert. Nonetheless, Hepburn’s role is considered by most to have been her most memorable and identifiable one. Indeed, Breakfast at Tiffany’s began Hepburn’s Hollywood career in the 1960’s. The character of Holly Golightly became the prototype for the Hepburn ladies in Paris When It Sizzles, How to Steal a Million, and Charade. The New York Times said of the film, “a completely unbelievable but wholly captivating flight into fancy”.
